This charming first novel by Jewett, published in 1877, purports to be the later remembered account by Miss Helen Davis of a summer she and her friend Miss Kate Lancaster, both 24 year old Bostonians, spent in a house on the Maine coast that Kate's great-aunt Katherine Brandon had bequeathed to Kate's mother. 12mo Hardcover. 255pp. No jacket, as issued. Brown decorated cloth over flexible boards. Gilt cat tales on cover and spine along with gilt titles. Wear at head and toe of spine. Spine has slight chipping. Tips bumped. Light soiling to front and rear cover. Previous owner's name in pen on ffep (dated 1877). P73 dogeared for quite some time, and sticks out just slightly from text block. Very thin cracks along hinges front and rear. Binding secure. Presumed first/first with "was" for "so" on line 16, p. 65.
