Jacques Hnizdovsky was a Ukrainian-born American artist best known for his ornate woodcuts depicting animals, plants, and narrative scenes. His works describe things in a realistic, highly idiosyncratic style based in his studies of Durer and Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Born on January 27, 1915 in Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine, Hnizdovsky was a member of a noble family. However, they were forced to flee during the 1917 Russian Revolution, and so he went on to study at both the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland and the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Croatia before immigrating to the United States in 1949. The artist created illustrations for a number of books, including The Poems of John Keats (1964), Tree Trail of Central Park (1971), and Flora Exotica (1972). Today, his works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Harvard University Art Museum, among others. Hnizdovsky died on November 8, 1985 in New York, NY.
