$275.00
- Shipmasters of Cape Cod by H.C. Kittredge-Captain J Henry Sears took command of the Titan in Liverpool, England. A youngster of twenty-six from Brewster but a veteran shipmaster. At twenty-two he had commanded the Faneuil Hall in the European trade, and at twenty-four had taken the clipper ship Wild Ranger to San Francisco on the first two voyages of her career. For the next two years, he was busy carrying troops and munitions between French ports and the Crimea in the Titan. Then in 1857 the Titan was ordered to New Orleans to load cotten for Liverpool. Sears took on 6900 bales- the largest cotton cargo ever shipped. The Titan had become leaky and ran into a full gale off Liverpool. The wind heeled the big hull over and the main and mizzen masts had to be cut away to right the ship. Then she was towed into harbor and rerigged. He traveled in the Franklin Haven and came ashore at the beginning of the Civil War to go into the shipping business. He remained in Boston until 1898 when he retired and moved to Brewster.
