These original, beautiful booklets were published as a weekly botanical series in 1894 by G.H. Buek & Co. in New York. It was designed to familiarize Americans with native flora from every state in the Union through detailed color lithographs. At the time of publication, the work was endorsed by prominent university botanists across both North America and Europe, which was a significant mark of authority for a fine art weekly.

Originally issued in 18 weekly parts running from May 15 to September 11, 1894. This lot includes the following publications of Vol. 1:  No. 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11,12, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 18.

SPECIAL NOTE: C olor litho back cover illustration by Maud Humphrey, t he mother of actor Humphrey Bogart.

Each plate typically features two different wild flowers, illustrated in color by special artists and botanists. The back of each print includes botanical information, anecdotes, and occasionally poems about the featured flowers. Text in English. The shape of the booklets is called Oblong Quarto. (This technical term describes the physical shape of the booklets—wider than they are tall (oblong) and roughly 8” X 12”.)

The soft, illustrated covers of the individual booklets are the original pictorial publisher's wrappers. Not a reproduction.

Experts emphasize that these are "detailed and accurate illustrations" created by a "corps of special artists and botanists," rather than "fanciful pictures" common in other 19th-century works publisher's wrappers.
